On Monday, the Marlins signed OF Aaron Rowand to a minor-league contract. The 34 year old batted .233/274/347 along with four home runs, 21 RBI and a .621 OPS over 351 plate apperances this past season before being released by the Giants in September. There is a connection between Rowand and new Marlins manager Ozzie Gullen from their time in Chicago. Rowand will have to earn his spot on the roster like anyone else coming into Spring Training -Rowand would be a nice fit as a reserved outfielder and right-handed bat off the bench.
Rowand is a very versatile outfielder, in his 2011 campaign he played 2 games at DH, 3 in RF, 26 at bats as a pinch-hitter, and played 46 games in LF while playing most his games in right field where he played 60 games.
Rowand, was the 35 pick in the first round by the White Sox in 1998. He also won the gold-glove in 2007 while playing for the Philadelphia Phillies.
